Financial Frictions and the Persistence of History: A Quantitative Exploration

چکیده
This paper presents a quantitative model of economic transitions. We explicitly model resource misallocation and financial frictions to explain observed transitional dynamics that are not consistent with the standard neoclassical growth theory. When calibrated to empirical evidence on resource misallocation and financial frictions in less developed countries, our model economy converges slowly to the steady state—it typically takes four times as long to cover half the distance to the steady state as the neoclassical benchmark. The interest rate and investmentto-output ratio start low and rise over time in the early phases of economic development. In addition, the model generates an endogenous TFP dynamics, reflecting the gradual unwinding of misallocation along transitions.

The Role of Financial Frictions in Iran’s Business Cycles: A DSGE Approach
B efore the incidence of the financial crisis in 2008, the financial sector was ignored in the most of business cycles analyses. It was assumed that the financial sector played no independent role in describing business cycle fluctuations and followed the real part of the economy. In recent years, modeling financial frictions have been much considered in business cycles literature. T...
متن کاملThe Asymmetric Effects of Financial Frictions
Economic variables move asymmetrically over the business cycle: quickly during crises but slowly during recoveries. I show that this asymmetry is stronger in countries with less developed financial systems and greater financial frictions. Then I explain this fact using a learning model with endogenous information about economic conditions. Financial frictions, which I capture by higher bankrupt...

This paper develops a model to assess the quantitative effects of barriers to entry and financial frictions on cross-country income and TFP differences. The main focus is on the interaction between barriers to entry and financial frictions. The model is calibrated to match the firm level statistics for the U.S. economy assuming a perfect financial market. The quantitative analysis shows that ba...

This paper discusses conventional and unconventional monetary policies in a dynamic small open economy model with financial frictions. In the model, financial intermediaries or banks borrow from the world market and lend to domestic households. The external debt of banks is limited by a multiple of their equity; in turn, households hold equity in banks subject to a limit, reflecting domestic fr...
متن کاملThe Persistence of Development Dynamics: Financial Frictions and Mobility Distortions
Successful economic reforms produce long-lasting transitional dynamics for developing countries. This paper analyzes how financial frictions and mobility distortions generate the persistence of post-reform development dynamics. I build a general equilibrium model with heterogeneous agents, occupation choice and ruralurban migration, and I calibrate it to China. The mobility distortion is an occ...
